Celebrating 15 Years of SanCare: Enhancing Care Through Innovation
This year marks 15 years of SanCare, the San’s locally developed Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system. Since its launch in 2010, SanCare has continued to evolve, enabling clinical teams to deliver safe, efficient, and coordinated care for every San patient.
Developed with the needs of our clinicians at its core and yet patient centred, SanCare has become an essential part of caring for patients at the San. From doctors and nurses to allied health professionals, SanCare supports our teams by bringing together clinical and administrative information they need, when and where they need it, in the right format.
Supporting clinicians, streamlining care
SanCare is the primary electronic medical record for all San inpatients, providing a central, integrated platform that includes:
· Medical, nursing, and allied health integrated progress notes
· Allergies and alerts
· Vital signs, fluid balance, and nursing observations
· All test results, including pathology, radiology, and ECG reports and images
· Admission details, discharge summaries, and procedure reports
It is fully integrated with a single data base and connects staff to departmental systems, theatre lists, e-referrals and consultations, drug information and other resources, contact details for other doctors, patient significant persons and the hospital’s intranet, all in one secure and accessible system. Electronic prescribing is the next major step.
Innovation on the go
Building on the success of the main platform, the award-winning SanCare Mobile app extends this functionality to iPhone, iPad, and Android devices. The app provides clinicians real-time, “anywhere” access to patient notes, test results, images, documents, and contact details, and allows them to add progress notes, order tests and create referrals. Doctors can also view rosters and theatre lists, as well as use tools for clinical photography and secure messaging, ensuring patient care doesn’t stop when clinicians are on the move. The project won the Health Informatics Society of Australia (HISA) Enterprise Achievement Award 2019 for outstanding achievement and is extremely popular with our doctors.
Secure, flexible access from anywhere
For full remote functionality, SanView, the San’s virtual desktop, provides clinicians with full access to SanCare, other clinical applications and the SAH intranet from any location and device. This flexibility allows staff to securely connect to San systems whether they’re on-site, at home or their office, or working remotely.

Over the past 15 years, SanCare has grown into a robust, secure, and user-friendly system that reflects the San’s commitment to innovation and excellence in patient care. As technology continues to advance, so too will SanCare, ensuring our clinical teams remain supported by digital tools that make their work more efficient, connected, and effective.
